Hello CEFC, Erica and I are in the process of moving and are trying to
get rid of a lot of our stuff. One of the things we need to get rid
of is our bearded dragon, Lizzie. She’s about 8 inches long (not
including the tail), and we have her in a 3’ x 1’ x 15” glass tank (no
water, just sand in the bottom and a rock and stick). She eats live
crickets and vegetables, and doesn’t need water (she gets it from the
food). Here’s a list of everything we have we can give you:
Bearded dragon
Glass tank
Bag of sand for the tank
Rock and sunning stick for the tank
Poop scoop
Heat lamp with timer
Cricket cage
Cricket food

Let us know if you would like to take care of it. You can email or
call (630-853-4227). Thanks a lot!

Hey CEFC,

This is a reminder email that we will be having a picnic this coming Sunday (the
25th) right after church (so 11:30ish) to thank the Sheas for their years of
service to us (nothin’ formal happening, though) and to say good-bye to the
Hasslers and Blackburns and whomever else has announced they are leaving since I
was last at church.

Anyway, we look forward to having you all over and hoping the weather will be
nice. We will have the air on inside if it is unbearable and we can just spread
out over the house.

Please bring a lunch for you and your family. You can pick up Little Caesars,
Subway, McD’s, whatever, on the way. There will be some communal food, and we’d
rather have you come than skip due to not having a lunch. I’ll try to have
plenty of PB&J available for those who want it.

So, please join us for this informal gathering. 905 S. Lynn St., Champaign. If
you want to contribute to communal food, feel free to do so. We accept.

Looking forward to being with you all again,
Erin, for the Mattsons

Dear Church Family,

This past Sunday, Jason announced that we had appointed Brian Neradt and Adam Johnson to serve as elders for the church. As you may know, elders do not normally serve by appointment in our church. The typical way that someone becomes an elder at CEFC is through a process of nomination followed by a congregational vote during our March business meeting. However, our current bylaws also allow for the elders to make a limited appointment of officers when the need arises—so that new elders and deacons can serve when necessary, without having to wait until March rolls around again. We used this procedure to appoint Stu Smith to serve as elder when Karl Visser moved to Texas. We talked about this a little bit at the last congregational meeting, but thought it would be wise to describe the process again for those who could not attend, or as a reminder, so everybody knows what to expect.

Adam and Brian had both previously been nominated to serve as elders, so we thought it would be good to consider them for the office at this time. Both of these men spent a good deal of time in prayer and consideration before agreeing to serve. Jason and I interviewed each man at some length, to determine if they met the Biblical qualifications for elders, had the desire to shepherd the church, and understood the commitments required by the position. After praying and discussing what we had heard from each man, we decided to appoint them to serve.

Adam and Brian are now serving as elders for CEFC. At the September congregational meeting, you will have an opportunity to vote to confirm them in their new positions. Assuming that they are confirmed, they will serve as elders until next March, when the time of their appointment will end.

In March, when we elect officers, if we desire Adam and Brian to continue serving as elders, we will have to vote them into that position again. If they continue to serve after March, we will hold their commissioning service at that time.

If you have any questions regarding this process or the bylaws, please feel free to ask.

CEFC Attendees: Update on Life

Hi!
We wanted to send out an e-mail to keep you all updated on some big things that are going on in our lives right now (beyond adjusting to life with a new baby ). A couple weeks ago, I mentioned during the prayer request time that I was about to graduate with a Master’s degree and was deciding whether or not to continue on in the doctoral program. This is something that we have been praying about a lot over the past few months. The plan has been for me to stay for a doctorate, but as I have been researching jobs that are available with Master’s degrees and Ph.Ds, I have been finding that many of the job opportunities that I am most interested in are Master’s level jobs. We have been praying that if God would want me to just get a Master’s degree, that He would open up just the right job sometime this summer; otherwise that He would show that He wants me to stay for the doctoral program.
Last week, I had a job interview with a company in Beavercreek, OH. Based on the interview and much prayer, I have decided to accept this position rather than stay for my Ph.D. Betsy and I will be moving to Ohio sometime during the first week of August. One way in which we see God’s hand in this job is that it is barely a mile from the church that Betsy and I attended while in college. The many relationships which we still have with people there will significantly ease the transition to a new city, especially as we adjust to parenthood.
We have really enjoyed getting to know many of you over the past three years that we have been at CEFC. Thank you for the many prayers and meals which the church has provided for us. We will truly miss you all as we transition to this new stage of life. We continue to covet your prayers as we begin this next step of life. Thank you so much!
Joshua and Betsy

Dear CEFC family,

Here is an opportunity at the place where I work (Intensive English Institute) on the UIUC campus. Many of the students are older and some even have families. If you know of anyone that might be interested…please forward the email to them. (All of the information is listed below my email)

As of now I’m organizing people with their conversation partners, but as of now, the people who did volunteer will be getting around 3 students, whereas normally they have enough volunteers for each student to go with one person.

If you know of other churches in town or other people to contact, please forward the email.

You don’t have to name me as a reference or anything…just sign up if you’re interested!

Great opportunity to share the gospel with the nations.

Luke

Would you like to meet people from other countries?

ConvoPartner volunteers help Intensive English Institute students practice English and learn more about life in the U.S. Most of the IEI students are from Asia, but our diverse enrollment also includes students from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America.

What does a ConvoPartner do?

* Meet with a group of 2-3 IEI students for 1 hour every week for English conversation/social activities. The SU10 program will run for 6 weeks, from June 22nd to July 30th. The FA10 program will run for 12 weeks, from September 7th to December 3rd.

* Report volunteer hours each week to the IEI Convo Partner Coordinator, Megan Ficek, to confirm that you met with your international student partner

* Attend some of the all-IEI social activities. These events are, of course, optional, but the students love it when their conversation partners can attend!

How do I join?

U of I students and non-students are welcome to participate as Convo Partners. Volunteers must be fluent speakers of English.

You can sign up for summer and/or fall semester at http://www.iei.uiuc.edu/ConvoPartners.htm

*Questions? Know anyone else interested? Email Megan at convopartners@ad.uiuc.edu

June Congregational Meeting

Dear CEFC Members and Attendees:

This coming Monday, we will be having our June Congregational Meeting. Even if you are not a member, you are welcome to attend! We will be discussing some important issues.

Here is an overview of Monday’s meeting agenda:

Budget:
-We will receive the Treasurer’s report. Our giving is currently about $20,000 below our expenses, so we will discuss plans for meeting our obligations for the current fiscal year, and considerations for next year’s budget.

Votes:
-We will vote on adding Elliot Stesel to our membership.
-We will vote on final adoption of the constitutional amendment that brings CEFC’s Statement of Faith in line with the current EFCA Statement of Faith.

Discussion:
-We will hear a report about the formation of the Bylaws Committee, and discussion the committee has had so far about potential changes to the Bylaws.
-We will discuss plans for pastoral care for the congregation for the near future, including Jason’s role, an “open” elder retreat, appointing of additional elders, and resources that the EFCA district may be able to provide to our church.
-We will talk about hiring a part-time church secretary to handle some ongoing administrative tasks.
-We will talk about set-up and take-down issues.

That’s it for the agenda. There is a lot to discuss, but we intend to end the meeting promptly at 8:30, so that people can get home and put kids in bed, have family time, etc. Please also remember the Concert of Prayer this Sunday at 6:00 PM. It will be a great opportunity to approach the Lord together prior to our meeting.

“Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3, NASB
